Recently got back from a wonderful trip in Owens/Death Valleys. Five days and four nights consisting of the White Mountains, Volcanic Tablelands, Mono Lake, and Death Valley-Mahogany Flat Campground. I tested out using my Kelty Tarp 12 and it worked great.

I like the tarp idea as it gives you options in virtually treeless areas with a couple poles and can be tied to the camper & poles or camper and trees or other options as your campsite offers. Permanent roll-type shades are great but for very little cash, some poles, ropes and stakes you can McGyver yourself some sun and/or wind shelter out in the boondocks. At the end of each stay everything goes back inside somewhere and is not exposed to the sun, heat or rain especially in the off season.

Nice!

Here's mine. Been working on it and it does a great job. Can be mounted on either side.

What kind of awning is that? looking for a cheap, low profile awning like that.

Its home built. I used a lot of ideas from others. Used Bimini hardware from the boat store and a tarp from HF. If you google DIY rv awnings, there's lots of info out there.
