Used Camper Alert Thread

Remote buy of FWC:

I live in Washington and found the Grandby shell I was looking for on Craigslist in Las Vegas. I called the owner and interviewed him about history and condition of the camper. It passed that part, so I flew to LV for one day (cheaper, quicker, and more reliable than third party inspection).

It passed firsthand inspection, we exchanged cash for title at his bank with his banker counting the money in front of me.

He unloaded the camper at a storage facility I picked, I locked it up and we parted ways.

I paid storage for 2 months then took my truck through back-country Oregon and NE Nevada ending in LV. Picked up camper and camped the way home.

Still happy with price, how deal worked, and the camper.

REMOTE BUY OF FWC . . .

We bought our 2003 Eagle + 2001 Taco in 2009 from a retired couple in CA. I called and felt very comfortable with the discussion. I offered a deposit but he said he would hold it and I just knew this was all legit. My wife and I bought one-way plane tickets to San Francisco then took a bus to Santa Rosa and met the buyers at a hotel parking lot. I had a cashier's check and some cash to negotiate, but honestly, can you negotiate at that point? We payed him his asking price, threw our "camping stuff" in the back and asked where a good place was to camp for the night. They guided us to a nice park up in the hills and that is where we started one of our best trips ever!

This is a great story!

Regarding the shipping of a truck (or possibly a camper for that matter), I had a truck shipped down to Upper So.CA from the Seattle area using Uship.com. It wasn't cheep, but it was when I factored in one-way airfare and the fuel to go get it myself.

A note about getting quotes on Uship, beware of the brokers, some of the quotes that you'll get are not the actual shipping firm, they're brokers who will sub out your job to some contractor whom you have no control over. I would strongly advise against going with a broker, in the event of something going wrong your options are not nearly as good. I had a couple brokers act like they had the job, they were that pushy. I finally had to put in the bid request that I wouldn't respond to broker's quotes and firmly told those who'd already bid that I was not interested in dealing with them. That aside, I'd use uship again for any other such moves of large objects.
