Using Receiver Hitch As A Lifting Point With A High Lift Jack

Tom Shephard and other Brits all claim that the FIRST thing you do when you are stuck is to stop and brew tea. :) This to give you some time to calmly think about it.

Just in time for this thread I managed to bury our Kubota 4 WD tractor the other day working along our riverfront.

My father once managed to bury our Case tractor in our pasture - the one with a stream running though it so it could give a fair impression of a swamp. I got it out eventually with a come-along. But that was enough to convince me that I'll rob liquor stores if I have to in order to have an electric winch on my vehicles . . .

Thinking about it for sure...I realize that a bottle jack has less stability under load than a floor jack...

What size say ye? 3 or 4 ton? I do like the idea of a carrying case; don't like that it is made in China, but so is 95% of everything anymore.

I like the Idea of the telescoping ram with its longer lifting range, I would get the 6 ton.

What I was thinking is get some of the SafeJack pads and base (or make something similar)

I have a Highlift and am not a big fan of them. I mostly use mine to pull fence posts.
another thing to consider if you have an air compressor is one of the air powered bottle jacks. I bought one of the Harbor Freight ones to use at home and its nice because I can put it under the back axle of my truck and then get out of the way to raise it. it doesn't use much air but I haven't tried it with my 12v compressor.

In a prior life I taught scientific diving for 25 years and first rule in a stressed situation was to stop, breath, think, breath....breathing was as critical as stopping since under stress we tend to hold our breath...topside or underwater that leads to hypoxia which further leads to bad judgments...it of course posses other dangers to a diver...

Collective wisdom on this forum always amazes me and I learn a lot..... even in such a straight forward topic as how to best jack up my Tunda/Hawk...might even go the empirical route and deflate a tire [big shop compressor] and confirm that the bottle jack I just ordered will fit under a lifting point....old saw: "Prior preparation prevents piss poor performance" still is valid approach.

Thanks again to all for the tidbits!

Trike, one tip with a replacement is to check that it will still fit into the normal lifting position if you have a fully flat tire. ie that the min retracted height of your 8 ton jack is not greater than the bottom of a wheel rim to say, the bottom of the axle tube or wherever the usual lift point is.

Not a deal breaker per se as there are always workarounds, just good to know going in.

Ironically, times like this a hi lift can be useful ... :sneaky:

I see where you are coming from. I haven't measured, but I think the bottle jack is low enough to fit. If not, I guess I'm digging a hole. [emoji16]

And that's how you win a War. So my British family says, anyways. [emoji1]
