Vernal Equinox & Spring 2016!

We had some big thunderstorms in Bend this afternoon (well, big for this area -- it would be mild in the plains...).

A dump of hail just south of Bend looked like snow on US 97:

And a couple of houses in town were hit by lightning and caught fire.

At my house it was just a lot of crash, crackle, boom, rumble -- and rain.
Nothing like the heavens unleashing their wrath; ole Ma Nature letting us know she's still in charge. It gets your attention and makes you feel alive.

Big sign of spring here is the Ponderosa's have started unloading pollen. Everything is coated with yellow powder. It gets in everything, the closest thing to burning man I'll ever experience.

Make sure the Star Wars people see this! Tell them it happens all the time!
Yep, it's tiny bits of pulverized Death Star, fallen down from orbit, that's what that there white stuff is.

Some serious weather up there! Crazy hail and homes set on fire by lightning?
Weather is still unsettled here in NorCal.

We have had 4 sunny days in the last 3 weeks, 2 of which were my vacation. Yesterday a cold front brought winds and lighting. Today starts out in the 30's.... Crazy weather but not quite as crazy as out west....

Ah, spring time in the mountains...........................................

Today Bend hit the highest temperature of the year so far..and the next 3 days it's forecast to be a lot warmer -- record high temperatures (for the dates) in the forecast.
Time to head for the hills -- or the beach!

I think I'll head east and camp up on Pine Mt. and/or Glass Butte -- both of which have roads to their ~6400-foot summits and opportunities for dispersed camping very near the summits. Yeah, not very high compared to drivable spots in other western states, but Oregon isn't a very high state.
Although...it's probably a little higher since yesterday.

Heat came on quick, didn't it. It's warm and tolerable here but the lower elevations are getting cooked; summertime and the living ain't easy.

Everything is perfect for what we call "fire weather" up here; real hot above ave. temps, quickly drying tall green grass and a good wind. Brush fires are sprouting up all over the place, and me and "Bob" heading off to do a week or so run up to the Devil's Garden on the Modoc NF. Wish us luck, but I hear all the reservoirs are full and "Bob" is ready to chase some balls and do some swimming :D!

Here on the coast we were predicted to have high temps.
Luckily so far this weekend they haven't showed up.
64* today with high clouds, and thick morning fog.
Loving it.
Just hope it stays warm temps not hot up Lassen way in a week.

Friend of mine was put on voluntary evacuation status yesterday. Fortunately they contained it to 45 acres.

You had better hurry up here Frank! T-storms all night, overcast and rainy today with flash flood warnings and temp in the high 80's.! T-storms projected all week, rain Monday and Tuesday with temps lowering from the 80's to the 70's and even high 60's by weeks end. I wonder if we just had summer  ! Anyway I'm probably still heading up to the Devil's Garden but on Tuesday because Monday looks a bit dangerous up there in the high country! I really don't feel like driving around in that high open country during T-storms, lightning, muddy roads and flooding creeks.

A new record high (for the date) in Central Oregon set today at the official weather station in Redmond, OR:
98°F, breaking the old record high by 6°,
That's 25° higher than the average high temperature for the date (73°).
The high today in Bend was a few degree cooler than Redmond, as it usually is.

Wow Mark, 25° above the average! Cooled a bit here today. We went to higher realms and got thunderstorms and rain. It smelled so good!

Went to McClellan AFB (former) today with my parents to see the WWII planes. Nothing like concrete and steel to warm things up. Inside of a B17 felt just like work! I was hoping for a slower start to summer.
