What walkie talkie sets do you use?

We have been using 5 watt marine GMRS radios for years and they are cheap and dependable, water resistant and easy to use. Plus you get the weather on them even inland.

We bought a Midland package with a real small unit in the center console box ...all controls on the Microphone for the truck cab and 2 hand help units (also with weather bands) ..great coverage radius ..a couple miles if flat, and in woods about 1/2 mile. When we were in Baja for a couple months it was great as one of us takes the dog for a walk and can be in contact while away from camper if there was any unpleasant incidents (none). Just made us feel safer.

The more options you give yourself the better. Ham is very useful when I head South down 395. The Bishop Amateur Radio Club has good coverage from Mono Lake down South. Heading North Lassen has very good coverage, Plumas not so much. I am also GMRS licensed but I haven't found it very useful unless your group is using it.
