Who Made These Circles in the Sahara?

I'm laughing. I "knew" that these dots were the results of geologic exploration. Varmints were not on my radar. Next time when I'm in the area of dots, I'm going to explore and see what is there.

................ or possibly ants.
I had the good fortune to spend two consecutive summers in the middle of Michigan's UP conducting field sampling programs in search of diamonds. Our client was a Belgian company with principal operations in Southern Africa. Their exploration managers told of extensive sampling programs for anthills in arid regions of thick windblown cover. Some of the anthills were + 10' above surface and excavation showed the workings extended to many dozens of feet in depth below surface. So the ants substituted for auger soil sampling drill rigs quite nicely.

So, what did we find on the UP? Mostly mud. Lots and lots of mud. A handful of kimberlites were discovered by aerial electromagnetic survey, but none were found to be diamondiferous when tested by core drilling.
