My son's grampa was jewish and grew up living above a deli in NYC.
I always loved when Joel would say:

"Don't quit your day job!"
 
This is a bit different than AlleyKat first thought, but I've been struck by how many of our expressions come from a different, geezer-era.
For example:

"Hold your horses!"
 
It was someone like WIll Rodgers who said about Mormon Lake (AZ, where Expo West has been held several times) "If this was my lake I'd mow it!"
