I count myself lucky to have representatives I like... Trouble here for me is that I still feel voiceless. I just hope there is a “change in the wind” this next year and that a reversal or at least a braking of the out of control careening towards the cliff...... EPA? water air soil, the health of the next generation.... scheeeeze we need the youth to get mad!

After the lack of attention in Colorado and the waste dumped into a river I'm not so sure the EPA is fulfilling the protection they boast.

To some degree this has nothing to do with Trump and everything to do with Utah. I am sure Trump had no idea where Bears Ears or GSENM were, and likely still has no idea where they are. He is just appeasing the delegation from UT that supported him.

I too have spent months of time in SE Utah exploring the many wonderful areas, but made a promise that I would not be spending anymore money in UT after this debacle. Between the Outdoor Retailer show moving to CO and many of the smaller individual protests, lets hope UT feels some pain for this.
Because Nevada is closer and less crowded, we choose to explore there. Ski3pin has many TRs there and if you use Google Earth you will discover some amazing places. Ditto, Eastern Oregon, SW Wyoming, any part of Idaho, etc.

I, too, am disgusted about the politicalization of our public lands. I sent my comments in but to no avail. We will continue to explore OUR public lands and support the local communities.

Yep-now they want to drill off the California coast for the first time in 40 years (I guess all coasts now including the Arctic are now on the sale list, [except for Florida because the GOP gov wants to run for congress])! They did not have to live through or clean up the last spill we had or that one up in Alaska! Speaking of oil spills and the like, congress just stopped putting $ into the fund that they once set up to cover the next spill. They never stop pushing and each time they do, it goes to court and adds another road block to properly managing all those wonderful Public Lands. Make sure you vote!!!You can add NE California to that list of places you still go play in (maybe I should not say that). To many people up here in the NE-don't come here :D !

BLM has started taking comments on the Resource Management Plan for the 'new and degraded' version for GSENM:
https://eplanning.blm.gov/epl-front-office/eplanning/planAndProjectSite.do?methodName=dispatchToPatternPage&currentPageId=141292

This seems quite premature given that there are at least 6 lawsuits on going about this. Given that Zinke entirely ignored the comments submitted about GSENM before, I am a not sure what good this will achieve However one think to note is that these comments can effect decision by BLM staffers and rangers on a local and regional operational level as opposed to the previous round that were really to political appointees.

The new "Projected Protests" happening on buildings in NYC, DC, CO and elsewhere. At least it puts it up front in people's minds.

Hi Smoke,
You pointed out a great area to explore between NE California and Western Nevada. It’s beautiful there and quiet. We plan to do more rockhounding in that area this spring. Happy camping.

If I had a Billion Bucks I would do as the Owner of Bert's Bees up in Maine or the North Face folks down in Chile. In 1979 I was attached to the US Embassy in Paraguay and traveled a lot..... my favorite people and place was Chile... incredibly like Alaska along the coast. Before cell phones and internet the Torres de Paine was wildly remote. I spent a month hiking up and around the Grey Glacier. It imprinted on me (I was 25) how valuable that wildness is. We are lucky that this happened to save a place on earth for future generations to feel that same feeling. Wish the spirit would infect our wealthy to do likewise if the Feds don't pony up.

Nice-I've often thought about visiting that part of the world! Conservation is not a part of how this bunch of thinks-unless they can make a buck-that is! Gotta vote and hope there is something left to save!!

For a broader view, we have been rewatching Ken Burns' series on the National Parks. This series presents an excellent historical overview of America trying to come to grips with how to manage, conserve, preserve what little remains of unspoiled land on our continent. These battles are not new. And, I suspect will continue until we are all fighting over the last crumb.

"But, however abundantly supplied from legitimate sources, every national park is besieged by thieves and robbers and beggars with all sorts of plans and pleas for possession of some coveted treasure of water, timber, pasture, rights of way, etc. Nothing dollarable is safe, however guarded." John Muir
