RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Things you've learned the hard way

When putting the camper back on the truck, do the reverse. It's not as bad as forgetting to unplug when taking it off, but it's still a pain in the neck to plug it back in through the access hole. Tip: use duck tape to hold up the rubber flap whilst plugging it in.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Anyone NOT using the electric water pump?

Our hand pump began to leak, so when I replaced it with the ShurFlo faucet (fabulous faucet) and a ShurFlo pump, I mounted the pump so it would be relatively easy to remove during storage during freezing weather and to keep it above freezing when camping in weather above 20'F. It should be...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Topa Topa Bluffs/Nordhoff Ridge

Kelty Carport & Just where are the Topa Topa Bluffs? How's the Kelty Carport working out? Is it easy to setup and packup? Can it be hung off the back of the camper for rain protection? We've been looking for a store with one in stock to look at them. Living in Silverlake in LA, the Topa Topa...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC Air Conditioner Option?

Ok, Stan, what are you guys up to at FWC? ScottBaily referenced an air conditioner in his post http://wanderthewest.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1397. Is it the Coleman Polar Cub from your Six-Pac sibling? Is it a "swamp" cooler? Those of us in hot weather climes want to know.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West FWC advice -- preorder option selection

Been there. Car camped until 2 1/2 years ago. Had a VW bus outfitted for camping (our own mod) some years ago. Now have an Eagle. Your list is quite close to what we have and would recommend, especially the furnace, two power roof vents, and solar. I just added a solar panel myself and we just...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 12V Outlet Mod

Yup. I was going design and build my own circuit, but then I realized that there was enough space behind for both converters. And if a converter dies, it will be easy to replace. The off-the-shelf converters are reasonably efficient. I took an old one apart and it used a switching regulator...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 12V Outlet Mod

I hate the 12V car plugs as much as I hate 110V wall-warts - always an awkward jumble of plugs and a mess of cables. I augmented the 12V outlet panel with a 5V USB outlet and a 6V mini-rca jack. The USB runs the iPod and charges the cell phones. The 6V powers the speaker. I actually didn't get...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Fridge Fan

Great idea. We just installed a solar panel, so daytime operation is just the ticket. I do recommend a thermometer for the fridge (we got one with an external readout) so you can keep it at a reasonable temperature. Ours can go from 45' on a hot day to 25' at night if I don't adjust it.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Which FWC on Toyota Tacoma

We have an Eagle on a 2006 Tacoma (Access cab) that we got new and have been very happy with the combo. We got air bags installed in LA, but the outfit really didn't know what they were doing. After we had them fixed at Les Schwab in Portland (they know what they are doing), they have worked...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Gone Solar!

Forgot to add that the total weight added of about 27 lbs is still manageable when lifting the front of the camper, but a few years down the line, my back will probably "encourage" me to come back to look at the various roof lifting devices that have been posted.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Gone Solar!

After a good bit of research (see http://www.wanderthewest.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1332) and two weekends, the PV panel is now mounted and running. We got a 120W Mitsubishi panel and a MorningStar SS-10L-12 charge controller from Alter Systems. There are other good vendors out there, but...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West ShurFlow Faucet

When our manual pump faucet began to leak (around the base, 15 seconds after pumping), Pvstoy's ShurFlow faucet looked great (http://www.wanderthewest.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1216&highlight=faucet) In fact, it's even better in real life. It allows variable flow and accepts standard spigot...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Norcold Fridge Won't Ignite - Help Please

Those igniter switches don't last forever, either. The first Norcold in our Eagle lasted two years (absorption chamber). Fortunately, there is a 3yr warranty. But as others have noted, the equipment available to FWC and ATC often leaves a lot to be desired. If the Japanese ever get into RV...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West A New Air Dam

How to Attach? Can you add a little more info on how the tube is attached? It sounds like you drilled through to the inside, with bolts from below passing through the angle aluminum and post to the T-nut. How many bolts did you use? The bolts away from the ends, I presume you drilled through...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Best Modification

ShurFlo Electric Faucet Really like the faucet, especially since the hand pump has started to leak, so I ordered one (with pump). Question: What did you build the riser out of, and did you have any problems mounting the faucet?

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West TurboCool Swamp Cooler?

Has anyone had experience with a TurboCool evaporative (swamp) cooler? It looks like one could replace the fan with one of these (and still be able to lift the roof per http://www.wanderthewest.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1323). http://www.turbokool.com/

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Solar Info Source

We've been planning to add a solar panel to our Eagle and it's now moving into the doing it stage. I'll post the results when it's done - but in the process of researching solar, I came across http://howto.altenergystore.com/Library-Articles/, which has the best and most complete articles on...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Battery gauge reliability?

Battery Gauge Bottom line, get a $10 digital voltmeter from Radio Shack, print out a battery charge voltage chart, and make your own measurements (the 12V outlet is a lot easier to get to than the battery). The gauge is almost for sure just a simple voltage divider network. I checked my gauge...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Mind the Gap

Into the Gap We have a Yakima fairing installed, and as as best we can tell, it helps on the gas mileage by about 5% at high speeds. About a year ago, we chatted with another FWC'er who had built a complete aluminum canopy to enclose the space and eliminate drag. He felt he had improve gas...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West backup camera

Costco has a decent backup camera for about $90. Mounts on the license plate and uses RF to communicate with the display. We still ended up bringing wire from the back to the engine compartment to get continuous 12V. The major problem was mounting the display in our 2006 Toyota Tacoma

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West AC/DC Inverter install

A 1kW inverter can generate a fair bit of heat - be sure not to cram stuff around it. You might want to leave the turn buckle door just a bit open and place a spacer on the edge of the box so that the a gap is left between it and the lid. This also gives a slight backward tilt to the bench...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Drip Edge Dumps Rain Over Door - Solutions?

In the last few days, something has happened in sunny SoCal that is just not mentioned in polite society. It's the "R" word, and the stuff has been coming down rather heavily. If the FWC is tilted back at all, the rain water on the roof flows back and comes down right in front of the door. It's...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Great sound, low cost, 5 minute install

We got a Logitech mm28 portable speaker and mounted it with picture frame wire from the ceiling. The mm28 sound is excellent, has low power drain, and we stow it behind the seat when traveling. It can be had for about $30 + shipping from http://www.xpcgear.com/logitechmm28.html. It uses thin...
