RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Mountainsmith storage solution for Bobcat

Not the Mountainsmith product, but I was recently given a soft sided trunk organizer with velcro strips on the bottom. It grabs onto the carpeted ledge of the camper and the seat of the side dinette when traveling. It didn't budge on the road to Tuweep campground this weekend. It held all my...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Looking for camping spots in northern New Mexico

If you do bring your dirtbikes to the Sacramento Ranger District of the Lincoln NF (south of Cloudcroft - Durango1's recommendation), consider riding the Rim Trail starting south of Slide Campground. Just be aware that you will be sharing it with hikers and bicycles. Rim Trail There are many...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West RFI Water Filters

In the camper I keep the Katadyn Hiker. For my last backpacking trip I took a Sawyer filter. It is very lightweight and small, but takes about 5 minutes to get one liter filtered. Reviews say it can clog pretty quickly, but I've only used it with clear water and so far, no problems with clogging.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Loon Lake 2016

It sure looks like Loon Lake is overloved, but based on the gorgeous photos here I can see why. Thanks for posting the trip report, Lighthawk!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Loon Lake 2016

Whoa! Way cool composite! Based on what I see in the image, my hypothesis is the Perseids glow green as they enter the atmosphere, then as they enter a little denser atmosphere, the glow gets redder. It looks like you have a couple of sporadic meteors in there as well, and interestingly, they...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Loon Lake 2016

In the photo you posted in the TR, the green side is the side closest to the radiant of the shower (closest to the Double Cluster in Perseus in your image). Is that the case for the other meteor images you took?

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Loon Lake 2016

Just plain beautiful. I'm staying tuned. Meteors give off an emission spectrum that is mostly due to the air around the meteor being heated, but also to material being ablated off the meteoroid itself. Speed of entry plays a role, too. That's awesome that you caught colors in your images. I...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Wolf Creek in the Eastern Sierra - August 2016

What fun to see the same trip through yours and GroovyDad's eyes. I feel the same as you about loss of habitat and our checkered history of conservation of species. I am grateful to all the anglers, hunters and lovers of nature that put time and effort into preserving what we can. The Gila...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West WOLF CREEK, CA, Fish & Camp

Well, Tenkara and Killer Bugs seem to go together, so it was an educated guess. I've tried Killer Bugs on my small home waters and although they get results, I seem to do better locally with Hare's Ear nymphs. Oh, and ditto on the nice fly-tying box. It is a small world. I'm a few miles...

Another wonderful report, Bill, with more great photos. I've caught brook trout and cutbows in Cabresto Lake. It's a good lake to fly fish. There are a lot of pretty Rio Grande cutthroat in Valle Vidal waters, but you have to have a good dead drift if you want to fool them. Shuree Ponds look...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Hey, what's your handle?

OK, I'll bite. "z" is the symbol for "redshift" My area of research is active galaxies and quasars, some of which have high cosmological redshifts, hence high z. I've used the highz handle for a long time in astronomy-related settings, so, it doesn't have to do with camping. I suppose "z" could...

This is what I use, too. I used Petzls at work, but after we got a batch with bad switches, I switched to the Black Diamond for my personal headlamp. I'm very pleased with it. When I am backpacking, I wrap the headlamp around a translucent water bottle, with the light pointing into the bottle...

Peripherally related story: I finally caved in to the pressure from friends and family and got a Straight Talk plan phone. I agree it is worth it to get a compass that lets you set the magnetic declination. Here's a nifty calculator you can use to find the declination anywhere you will be headed. I should add that you don't need to spend extra on a global needle unless you plan to travel to the southern...
