RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Thinking of selling my camper

Hi, I am considering selling my 96 ranger 2 FWC camper. I cut the wings off and gutted the interior so its a shell model. It needs some work, the roof has a dent in the corner and the vinyl is starting to show its age. Also the lifts will need updating at some point. I just thought I...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Drivability Camper on 2003 Tacoma

Hi Jim, I have a 93' Tacomea TRD with a 96' FWC Ranger II. With just two people, it works out just fine. Braking and handling are fair and as long as you drive defensively. Suspension is an aftermarket custom spring set by Alcan that really improved the ride, I also installed Bilsteins...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Anyone FLY into Saline Valley ?

Thats a small airstrip! I hope that they keep it, nothing like a little "bush" flying in the lower 48!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Leaf Springs

Custom springs and bilsteins is all I did and it works great. I dont do hard 4x4 roads so this worked for us. There is another company in Grand junction that does a good job building custom springs. I think they are Alcan.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Small camper advice/leads

SK1, The arctic pack is exactly what I meant to write. My Ranger II is a 98' and It did not have one, but I'm sure that they can be ordered after market from either FWC or ATC. Some guys on here have made their own with a foil bubble wrap with good results and a lot cheaper. Let us know...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Small camper advice/leads

Hi and Welcome, I started with a 98 Ford Ranger with a 4 banger and it got the job done, but if you plan on carrying your camper up and down Lake Tahoe, you might want to consider something more powerful. The FWC are light weight compared to most campers, but they push mini trucks to there...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tacoma MPG question

A manual transmission is the way to go if you want better gas mileage. I got 30 mpg in my 4 cylinder ranger with a fully loaded camper. I use hyper miling techniques and with any car I greatly improved my mpg. I upgraded to a 03' six cylinder Tacoma and it has a auto transmission. It is a...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Pebble Mine Alaska

I flew a trip into Dillingham AK last fall. I was impressed with the fishing fleet and discovered that Bristol Bay has the largest run of Salmon in the world. It would be terrible to loose one of the last strong holds of this species. In the long run, the fishing industry there will outlive...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Am I a candidate for a shell model?

I bought a beat up camper that was in very poor shape. It had been left in the rain for a few years and the interior needed to go. I tore out the cabinets and was planing on replacing them at one time, but after having a shell, I like the idea of being able to adapt to different seasons and...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West what do you do in bear country?

What I do is use the bear box if they are available and if you plan on not being around your camper for a few hours. If you plan on doing a hike, carry a extra cooler and spend the time to remove your food. Yosemite has some of the most determined bears I have ever seen. If your...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 2005 Tacoma payload

I stripped mine down to a shell and use a DC fridge and a dual fuel Coleman stove. I have not weighed my setup, but I would like to lose a few hundred more pounds. I like the flexability of being able to take mountain bikes or extra provision to suit any trip. I have custom springs and bilstein...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Finch Shell on a Tacoma

Hi Norman, The Tacoma is a very good truck and many FWC owners have them. You should be able to get by with that setup, but you will be seriously underpowered. The suspension will need to be improved to handle the weight of your camper and supplies. A good question you need to ask yourself...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West DC fridge versus AC/DC fridge

Just like Barko, I bought my Coleman DC cooler and have no complaints. I like them so much that I bought another one! They are hard to find, but I think you cannot go wrong if you went with the Engel. Here is a link for the company that makes the stirling cooler, global cooling. This company...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Should I be concerned?

Dunno, with aluminum you need to remove the oxide first to do any adhesive work which could be a chore and then I don't know how well it'd work in terms of fatigue over time. I'd be more inclined to rivet on some bracing pieces and be done with it. . Like pods recommends, riveting is the way...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Bobcat Shell on a Toyota Tacoma

Hi Norm, I only had a 98' Ford Ranger with the 2.5L engine when we bought our Eagle shell. Despite my best efforts to lighten the camper, it really struggled on any hill. The engine works way too hard and it will wear it out much quicker. The dangerous part is when the other drivers are...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West eyebolt supports and LED runner lights

Nice setup Skeeter for sure. How did you wire the leds? Did you pull out the furnace for some reason? I tore out the inside and replaced the rear lift. At that point, I had complete access to the rear wall. I wanted a shell model that was light as possible, so I traded the orginal 3 way...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West eyebolt supports and LED runner lights

Just wanted to share some pics of our new setup. I had eyebolt supports installed on all four corners of our Tacoma. I had them welded to the frame at a local shop. They give the truck floor much needed support and they feel very secure. They are 1\4" flat steel that has a few simple bends and...
