RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Done something really stupid?

This seems like a good thread for me to contribute to. We were traveling through Yellowstone on our way to our annual Oregon Coast trip a couple of years ago and had little mishap. We got a late start since I worked the nightshift the night before and had to nap a little. Needless to say...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Adding a propane hose & quick-connect inside a newer Hawk

Very clean install, thanks. I would also be curious on how you got around the potential double regulator issue with the camper and heater. Also what parts did you use on the heater to convert it from disposable 1 lb bottle fitting to quick connect? My little buddy heater kicks the snot out of...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Awning Recommendations

ARB 2500 has been great for us. It has survived the Wyoming winds and we also have the awning room which basically triples our livable space. The price is surprisingly reasonable too for being an ARB product.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tire chains..... annnnnd go!

It's more of a reality than a fascination in my opinion. Good snow tires help but they are nowhere near as effective as good chains especially if you venture off major roadways occasionally.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tire chains..... annnnnd go!

I think any kind of chain that has actual links as opposed to cables is going to be much better than nothing. They can be a PITA to put on but I can't imagine traveling in snow country, especially with the camper, without them. I carry them year round, I've used them several times in the...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 1988 Four Wheel Camper Grandby renovation and Tundra Fit

No pictures sorry. He already had it off the truck when i picked it up, but i did get to see the truck. I imagine an aluminum flatbed would even save more weight. I'm getting ready to sell my 88' but let me know if you have any dimension questions etc. while i still have it since it is in...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 1988 Four Wheel Camper Grandby renovation and Tundra Fit

I like it! The guy I bought my 88' grandby from had it sitting on a first ten tundra just like yours. He built a flatbed out of wood and beefed up the suspension and never looked back. He said he took it to baja several times and had no issues. Good luck with your build.

Congrats on the elk! Especially packing it out yourself, nothing about elk hunting is easy. Oh yeah, camper looks good too ;)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Looking for camper Jacks

I lucked out and found 4 new rieco titan jacks for less than half of retail on the local craigslist. I now have a couple cable jacks for sale for a screaming deal ;)

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Looking for camper Jacks

I did search the forum and didn't really turn anything up including your post. I'll look again tho. I'm confident I can weld the corner brackets if need be but I thought I'd check here before I spend almost half of what I'm looking at spending on this camper on new jacks. Not to mention...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Looking for camper Jacks

I'm looking at buying a slightly newer Grandby than the one I've got. It comes with the cable jacks but i'd much rather have the corner jacks or the tripod jacks. I would happily use the cable jacks for a partial trade if someone were interested. Thanks

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 84' fleet

As far as I know they all did. The several I've seen from the 80's definitely had an aluminum frame, including mine. I'm pretty sure an 84' will be aluminum too.

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Tacoma MPG w/ FWC?

I guess I'm playing the devils advocate when I say that I consistently get 15-17 mpg on varying road conditions with my f350 and grandby. Believe me, I'm a huge toyota fan my 88' 4runner is my pride and joy but I've never had to modify anything with the ford or worry about weight. It holds...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West 1988 Fleet in 1991 Toyota 22re

Nice setup! I have an old 4runner with a 22re and I'd echo what Squatch said about keeping it light as possible. The 22re is a legendary motor but it's very easy to bog it down with extra weight or bigger tires as i'm sure you know. Hopefully it's a manual transmission. I think your biggest...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West BF Goodrich All Terrain KO Tires - a Personal Critique

Interesting thread, I can't resist throwing my 2 cents in since i've owned or used most the tires mentioned in this thread. To start with the original post's tire the BFG. I have these on my 1st Gen 4runner. Dirt- B+ Mud- C Snow/Ice- C Tread life- D- Ride B Overall i'd give them a C as...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Vintage roof racks Vs. Big canoe?

Thanks for the info and ideas. I was envisioning our Penobscot flying down the highway in front of us after a hard brake. The cross bars are pretty flexible with even with just pressure from my hand. maybe i could wedge a cut down 2x4 under it for the entire length to support it more across...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Vintage roof racks Vs. Big canoe?

We just bought a new canoe and it is a 17' beast that weighs in around 75lbs. My 88' grandby has what appears to be factory aluminum racks. I've never actually seen another old fwc with this style of rack with the 1" square tube welded to plates that are screwed into the roof frame with 4...

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Four wheel camper in bear country

Keeping things clean is the most important like everyone has stated. I think a lot of it has to do with where you park too. I personally wouldn't leave my clean camper at the end of some remote trailhead, at least in the greater yellowstone area. If there are people around on a daily basis...

I think you pretty much just wrote the how-to manual on a full fwc restoration. If I could even get my lift panels and sideliner replaced I'd call it a major win. Solid work!

RV LIFE Forum Hub, Wander The West Max Wind With Hawk Top Up?

Well, we were near Craters of the Moon returning from an Oregon coast trip and we passed what looked like a Tacoma with an Eagle(?) with the top still popped up traveling down the highway. I didn't have much time to confirm that it was indeed a FWC fully popped up since we passed on a curve...
