Hot water heater - necessary or luxury?

Not the person you asked, but you're right about the inside shower. I've used one in a van, which has more interior volume and more ventilation. And even with a decent exhaust fan an awful lot of moisture gets into the living space and condenses in cooler weather. Not good. Not so bad in warm...

Dead Bolt Door Lock- Schlage Replacement?

Ther was at least one thread about the deadbolt failing. IIRC it had been installed upside down, so no surprise. My locksmith took off the oem one, which is rather ceesy, and replaced it with an off the shelf Kwikset. The press in part was a potential source of failure, the part the bot passes...

    Switching propane regulator?

Has anyone replaced the stock FWC Suburban propane regulator with an auto switching one? I know it’s tight in there, but maybe some one sorted it. My one year old stock regulator is already failing.

    Is This My Bad?

Here's the state park regulation vs the Reserve California one: https://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/642/files/Camping%20Regulations%20Flyer%20(Updated%202022)_v1.pdf It says "Self-contained (running water and flushable toilets) RVs/Trailers only." If you care to share the email the rest of us should...

    Is This My Bad?

What state park was this? I'd like to avoid it. But "portable toilet with holding tank" would cover lots of small Thetford cassette toilets. It says zero about a sewer connection, and in fact "portable" to me means "capable of being used outside the vehicle" ie not built in. So yeah, I would...

    2014 Hawk Overhead Lighting Alternatives

I like battery powered puck lights. If you get the magnetic ones they have thin round metal wafers available with adhesive on the back so you can mount them most anywhere. And they have remotes, and do different colors and dim. Lots on Amazon, etc. Some USB rechargeable, some with batteries.

Snow Broke my FWC Hawk Roof

Yikes. Sorry about that. Snow is the Achille's heel of popups for sure; I've had issues with other popups. Let us know what you find out.

Picking up Hawk in 2 Months - Questions

For wired outside lights I'd run wire through the walls near the floor from inside a cabinet, etc or even through the turnbuckle ports, then up the outside with some conduit, maybe mount on the bedrails. Or have FWC mark spots where you could drill through higher up without fear of hitting...

Picking up Hawk in 2 Months - Questions

I seem to think inside was an option maybe...i only wanted the switch outside though, since I only use it when I'm outside. So the one on the light housing itself works for me. For wireless I use puck lights. I can point the IR remote out the window to turn them on if I had reason to. I use...

Picking up Hawk in 2 Months - Questions

I'd go with whatever mounting solution FWC has at the time of installation. I upgraded my turnbuckles to some marine hardware with eyes instead of hooks, but you can do that after you see how it fares. With more solar and a rack I'd consider the stronger 40lb lift struts, unless you're going...

    Lithium or AGM

Mine only heats when there's a charge source as well, but doesn't draw that many amps. Once charging is underway a bit the battery generates heat from that. Discharging I'd say my lithiums have performed about the same as my old AGMs. Lithiums of course have more charge cycles in them, and...

    BIG changes to FWC's video

I think the only changes that are non optional, at least for a Hawk, are the switch to a lithium battery and its charger and flush mount sink and stove. If one does option a heater, it's the new one. The base weight increased 100 lbs.

    BIG changes to FWC's video

Of course all the new options come just months after I got my 2023. Sigh. The Truma heater looks like a nice upgrade, as well as under bed storage. That's a great bargain. And the external lift will be a favorite. Given the AC option I guess maybe even sturdier roofs; be nice in snow country...

    Frustrating interaction with FWC

It would be a pretty substantial change. I yakked with them about a more insignificant one, and it seems holding up the line, pre-ordering parts that may be scarce, etc, etc were all factors. They were pretty clear at ordering that I should get it right the first time; they really don't do...

Side dinette vs rear dinette vs ?

I got the side dinette. I love to flip over the seat and lounge with my back to the front side of the camper. And while the window is low, you can get a decent view...especially if you slouch a bit :) Room to store stuff underneath too.

Rut roh, truck bed cracking at tie downs

I'd call FWC re possible solutions like the Das Mule brackets, but if the bed is aluminum I think you need alternate tie down points ASAP.

New thermal pack: quilted with lower window covers

They now sell the window covers separately, $300 for the set. I didn't see it on the website so one would probably have to call. I think it's a set for four windows.

Prepping Ram 2500 for Hawk question

My installation looks very much like ramblinChet's; it's in the exact same space on the door and I used the same conduit. A few differences though. I used 3M tape mounted tabs that accept zip ties for anchoring the conduit. I used the Camera Source camera and housing. My camera seems to use...

New battery won't fit through cabinet door. (I'm an idiot)

You might be able to slice through the silicone. A battery compartment for a lithium needed be sealed, so compromising it won't matter. Or maybe return and get two smaller ones and wire 'em up in parallel to get the same capacity.

    Remote temperature sensing

Where I live, in today's heat (90F), if someone saw a dog in a van for more than a few minutes in the parking lot they'd bust down the door and rescue it. And law here allows that. Might want to put a sign to the effect that temp is being monitored remotely or something. And have a backup to...

FWC Electrical basics and upgrading to lithium!

I'm not sure the battery monitors are worth it, especially with SLA batteries. I've owned about three brands of coulomb-counting (shunt) monitors, from Victron, Xantrex and can't remember. They're OK, but as the SLAs age and capacity changes you have to recalibrate using the capacity you...

Four wheel camper in bear country

This is one of the ones referenced; it's 27' by 27' and probably similar to one we used around a raft. https://www.udap.com/mm5/product/BEF But yeah, it's kind of hard to tell if they mean 27sqft or 27 x 27 feet on the website, but this most basic kit is that size. It would contain my truck...

Four wheel camper in bear country

Sounds like she needs a "bear unwelcome mat." Come in nail or electrical varieties. Only seen them at buildings in CO, though, but here's the CO Wildlife's guide with instructions: https://www.bearsmart.com/docs/unwelcome-mats.pdf Of course I'd forget while going outside at night for a pee...

New thermal pack: quilted with lower window covers

Yeah, I wonder how much an upholstery shop would charge me to add material to the back of my existing, now old fashioned thermal pack. A nice layer of synthetic pile or wool. Don't some people stuff Reflectix in? it doesn't have much if any R value though. I wonder too if I would need to remove...
