RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Got my truck

Just a quick update for those who care, I ended up with a 2011 Nissan Frontier Pro-4x 4x4. Got a great deal on it so I couldn't pass it up. It will be a great truck for 4 wheeling in the desert, but it has a short bed, so my camper will only really be used for sleeping only. It has a 4.75 ft...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Nissan Frontier.... Long bed or short bed?

Hmmm, maybe the short-bed then? The Falcon is way small, how much would Finch hang off the back? I think it hangs about 6" off the back. Not sure on the Frontiers, though. FWC site has pictures of the Finch hanging off the back. Doesn't look too bad.

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Will the roofrack have to come off?

Will the cabover section of a FWC or ATC go over the roof rack? I sent an email over to FWC but I never got a response.

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Nissan Frontier.... Long bed or short bed?

What is the wheelbase difference between the two? If you are wanting to put a camper on the truck I would go for the long-bed. It will handle a camper much better than the short bed will. Quite a difference in the wheelbases.... 131" for the long bed, 116" for the shorter bed. I was...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Nissan Frontier.... Long bed or short bed?

I have my eye on two Nissan Frontiers at the moment. One of them has a long bed (6ft) and the other is the regular short bed (5ft). The idea of a longer bed sounds good, because I can put a longer camper on, but will this be harder to use offroad? I don't want a super long truck that will be...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Tacoma vs Frontier

I was hoping somebody could clear this up for me. I was researching the payloads of both trucks, and what I'm gathering is that the Tacoma, for some reason, is able to haul a lot more weight than the Frontier. Is there any particular reason for this? The Tacomas seem to have about 300-400...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Best place to get vehicle specs?

I was trying to compare the payloads for the Tacoma and the Frontier, which are two of the trucks I am currently considering. I would need to know the GVWR for each, as well as the total weight of just the trucks themselves. Anyone have a good resource? I still haven't given up on the...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Dodge Dakotas?

One last question, There's a really nice 2004 Ram 1500 I found for $6,000. It has 158,000 "highway miles", new tires, new brakes, 4x4, looks awesome. Is that a good deal? How many more miles before I start having some serious engine troubles? Anyone?

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I understand what you are saying about the Tacomas, but unfortunately the dealerships (who would be able to help me with the potential rust issue) want too much for Tacomas. Even ones with 180,000 miles are 10k! I would almost have to buy one through a...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Dodge Dakotas?

Ouch, I was afraid of this. They're selling cheap, there must be a reason. I know most people here like full size trucks, but I just have a feeling they wouldn't be able to go to some areas I go to in Death Valley. A mid-size seems like the way to go, but every one I've researched has issues...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Dodge Dakotas?

Hey guys. I'm getting closer to finally buying a used truck. I have come across quite a few Dodge Dakotas and Dakota Sports that can be had for very cheap ( less than 5k). They have quite a few miles, usually (120-170k), but hopefully these are dependable long lasting trucks that can go...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Question on Ford Ranger

If the camper is on a trailer being towed behind the Ranger, you are correct. Although my Ranger only weighs 4,300 pounds, so, I'm not sure I would tow the capacity Ford mentioned. If the camper is in the truck bed then you want to pay attention to the vehicle load capacity. For a Ranger I...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Question on Ford Ranger

I was looking at the Ford website, and the 4.0 V6 version of the Ranger has a towing capacity of 5,800 pounds. Wouldn't this be plenty for a camper? Even if I load up the camper to the max, it'll still be less than 2000 pounds worth of weight. Maybe I'm not understanding how towing capacity...

Anyone interested in a good project vehicle? I will be sending a 1995 GMC 4X4 1ton 15 passenger van to auction in the Reno area on April 14. this van is in very good condiction with about 70,000 miles on it. It was used buy a local government recreation department (which is where I work as Fleet...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Can a full size diesel truck do Dedeckera Canyon?

I saw that Sportsmobile video several years ago which erased any doubts I had about getting thru Dedeckera Canyon. Personally I think the Sportsmobile prolly could've taken it slower, picked a better line and made it thru unscathed. I do remember that F-250 Lighthawk and the trailer I think we...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Can a full size diesel truck do Dedeckera Canyon?

We bought our truck used a couple of years ago for getting a camper. Our previous truck was a 1994 ranger with the OHV 4.0. Put 200,000 miles on it and would have kept it but it was a stepside. We stuck with the ranger because I'm pretty familiar with them. We changed the rear leaf springs to a...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Can a full size diesel truck do Dedeckera Canyon?

Yes, but not in a full size diesel pulling a trailer. Trip Report Great pictures. I am considering a 4x4 Ford Ranger like yours, but I worry a little on how much weight it can tow. I plan on having a fridge, a water tank, a water heater, possibly a porta-potti, and a few other heavy...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Can a full size diesel truck do Dedeckera Canyon?

Still debating on which truck route I should go with.... lighter v6's or heavier diesels. I came across this video, which shows a Sportsmobile van go through a particularly nasty section of the road. It sounded like he banged up his bumper pretty good, and at one point it looked like he was...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Which models will allow me to sleep across the camper?

Four Wheel Camper's web site still sucks, update have been coming for years now. But this should answer your question http://www.fourwheelcampers.com/extendedbeddetails.pdf That helped a lot! Thank you. Glad to know it wasn't just me not understanding something that was obvious.

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Which models will allow me to sleep across the camper?

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but upon reviewing the FourWheel website, I couldn't figure out the bed lengths on certain models. The Falcon model, for example, is the smallest, and has a 66"x75" pullout bed. I assume it is 66 inches from one side of the canvas to the other, and...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Will a Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier, or Toyota Tacoma need suspension upgrades?

I turned around in Dedeckera in my Tacoma, but I was playing it safe. I have Firestone Ride-Rite air bags on my Tacoma and they were great and were easy to install, cost about $230 I think. I did not get the automatic air system, I just fill the bags with a bike pump, very easy/simple/cheap...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Will a Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier, or Toyota Tacoma need suspension upgrades?

Yes if you want a stable, level ride. Air bags, overloads, timbrens etc. don't cost that much. There are lots of resources on this site for that info. If I were to start over I would use a larger capacity truck, most likely a 3/4 ton. Thanks for the reply. Can I ask the reasons why you...

RV LIFE Multisite Forum, Wander The West Will a Ford Ranger, Nissan Frontier, or Toyota Tacoma need suspension upgrades?

So my truck quest has come to a fork in the road... older diesel 4x4's, or smaller v6 4x4's. I plan on putting on a 6.5' popup camper, which I'm sure won't be a problem for the diesel trucks. For the smaller V6's, though, I'd be worried about having to do an immediate upgrade to the...
