    Furnace won’t spark

I’ve certainly become a believer. I removed the tube, and have had several years of flawless operation. I think altitude dependence is a red herring. I’m convinced that the corrugated ducting just creates enough drag to slow down the air so that there is not enough airflow to activate the sail...

Is this for real? I can’t find it on the Victron site, or anywhere else online. Could you post a link? Thanks.

    DC/DC Charger Location

In case you didn't notice, I also mounted the Orion on 1" standoffs which allows a lot more airflow around the heatsink. For the side couch system I drilled 4 air vents to the outside. For the front dinette installation, I added a thermostatically controlled muffin fan which exhausts through a...

    DC/DC Charger Location

Don't know if this helps, but these were my installations in a Hawk with a side couch configuration, and one in a Hawk with the front dinette.

    DC/DC Charger Location

I have mine installed in my battery compartment in the camper. It has never gotten even slightly warm. But my tundra has a smart alternator, and it seems that after a half hour of the truck running, the Orion never puts out more than 150W, which is disappointing. But ymmv.

    USB and inverter outlet upgrades

I just installed one of these and have been using it for a week. 2x 30W USB-C outlets and 1x 18W USB-A. One reason I chose this one was that it is easy to cover the display with a small piece of electrical tape, so that it is completely dark at night. I use all three outlets; It’s been working...

    Door window leaks

We had the same problem with our 2019 Hawk. I took the window out and recaulked it thoroughly during the reinstall. It helped somewhat, but the problem remains.

    Broken side window glass

BTW, did the shop give you any hints? I wonder what is the method for releasing the caulk that holds the whole outer frame in the camper?

    Broken side window glass

I haven't completed this yet, but it's close. After inspecting the unit carefully, I figured out that the frame would have to be disassembled/damaged to be able to put new glass in, so I decided to just order a new window. I got a quote from a custom window maker, which would have...

    Broken side window glass

2019 Hawk with the front dinette configuration. We were just starting north on the Dempster Hwy, when a passing truck threw up a rock which shattered the back half of the left window. Fortunately with some salvaged cardboard and duct tape, we were able to get to Tuk and all of the way back to...

2023 Hawk Shell Battery charger install

Aha, thanks. They don't say why it needs to be placed far away; perhaps it has to do with the outgassing from lead acid batteries that is mentioned later? Of course, the shorter the DC cables, the better. My charger is next to the battery but not above it. Now I'll be on the lookout for problems...

2023 Hawk Shell Battery charger install

Note: I have a 2019 Hawk; the wiring layout for the new version may be different. I installed a Victron IP22 12V/30A charger/power supply in place of the factory Iota when I did a lithium upgrade. I mounted it in the battery compartment, in fact all of my power equipment is there. It's a...

    Synchronizing Victron Components

Maybe I'm missing something here. My Victron shunt determines state-of-charge (SOC) based on amp-hour usage, compared to the battery ampacity that I specify. It doesn't use voltage as a measure of the SOC. I don't think that the MPPT uses the SOC from the shunt to control the charge profile...

Not exactly a double blind test, but I believe your theory.

    CO2/ propane detector going off

This is a long shot, but…once when our camper was stored in the garage and I was working with some gasoline, the propane detector started going off. Fumes were very light, but it was a closed space. Stopped when I aired the place out. Is there any chance that there are gasoline fumes nearby...

    Lithium battery question.

The capacity of the batteries is given by the Wh value, which is the voltage x Ah. For some reason, batteries are often specified in Ah. So, two 6V 100Ah batteries will be equivalent to one 12V 100Ah battery. And so forth. Pretty easy to calculate. The advantages of lithium are: - the energy...

    Atwood Furnace Sail Switch

This topic has been addressed in a billion threads here. (My) short answer, that many others have also recommended, is to take out the corrugated “dryer” hose from the furnace to the grill on the cabinet. It allows the blower to run just enough faster to activate the sail switch. This totally...

    Utensil drawer dimensions front dinette

I am still finding utensils and so on that bounced out of the utensil drawer and are now under the water heater and generally in impossible-to-reach places. After a couple years of this I trimmed an HDPE cutting board to fit the drawer, and the problem disappeared. Now I see that this seems to...

    Eye bolt installation backing plate

I had an eyebolt break on the stem, and so lost the backing plate. Using my remaining three for spec, I ordered matching aluminum and eyebolt from McMaster Carr: 3/16" x 3" x 6" 6061 8975K85 Eyebolt: 3014T471 Could be that different FWC installers use different dimension of aluminum. This...

Question about lithium batteries and storage

That's right, charging a lithium up from a non-lithium charger for short periods of time will work just fine. As you said, the guidance for SOC during storage is all over the map, and seems like it is focused on preserving the lifespan of the battery. They never seem to say how much the...

Question about lithium batteries and storage

I think one of the confusing aspects of this topic is the self-discharge rate of a lithium battery vs. base load. For sure, a completely unconnected lithium battery has a very low self-discharge rate, and can sit on a shelf for a very very long time before it gets to a significantly low...

    Camper dolly height.

I designed my dolly to fit just under the central part of the Hawk, so the floor beams hang over the edge a bit. There is storage inside for the jacks and the tailgate, for use when the camper is on the truck, and I lift the dolly up on its side to minimize the clutter in the garage. The camper...
