Taking off tomorrow on a nearly 3 week road trip with 6 other vehicles. I'll be in my Power Wagon but we will have two Sprinter vans (not lifted) and a truck with a cab over. This will be my first time in ID/WY/MT and I am hoping to find some primitive camp sites that are accessible with our larger and less capable vehicles. If anyone has any recommendations, I am all ears.

We are most interested in primitive camping on BLM or in National Forest, being near water is a big plus. I do have Gaia so coordinates are easy for me to plug in.

So you have an idea of our route, it is roughly as follows.

Lake Tahoe - Elko, NV (Smith Ranch Springs)

Elko, NV - Stanley, ID (Redfish Lake area)

Stanley, ID - Hamilton or Butte, MT (no proposed campsite)

Butte, MT - Glacier National Park, MT (no proposed campsite)

Glacier National Park, MT -Yellowstone (no proposed campsite)

Yellowstone - Jackson/Tetons, WY (no proposed campsite)

Jackson, WY - Northern/Central Utah (no proposed campsite)

TIA!

We live in far NE corner of Oregon and be advised that several huge fires are burning in Idaho and a couple here in the Eagle Cap Wilderness...little progress on stopping these fires as RH is low with high temps..expect poor air quality and perhaps road restriction...

In planning and driving your route, check ahead...some of these fires are deemed to be "let burn" fires....so I don't expect relief until the end of Sept or into October.

Check here for smoke map...https://fire.airnow.gov

And another....usually slow to report current conditions.. https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/

Tons of options near Stanley and along the Salmon river. Some are "campsites" but a lot of BLM land, You could cross over from Ketchum through the Copper Basin (awesome area and fishing) and then head towards Butte.

Currently not tons of options....

Well over 100,000++ acres burning from Stanley to North of Salmon [along Salmon River].....again, don't count on getting into areas and be prepared for heavy smoke and possible road closures...expect more fires and little containment of existing fires...

Howdy

Do you really travel with six other vehicles ?

Ha! I thought the same thing....but perhaps 5 vehicles are needed to support the Power Wagon [just joking...]?

Only our style but we enjoy the solitude off road, hence travel solo and avoid others....not for everybody, depends on your proclivities and tolerance for assumption of risk...
