Northern California weather is changing.........

National Weather Service

Statement as of 3:42 PM PDT on September 30, 2011

... Cooler... wet and windy weather next week...

A series of cold fronts will sweep across northern California
next week. Temperatures will begin to cool this weekend ahead of
the first front... due to arrive Monday. Rain showers will spread
across the region Monday and Monday night. Snow levels may briefly
drop to around 8500 feet including higher passes such as Sonora
pass and the Highway 89 Summit Area near Mt. Lassen by Monday
night. Only a light dusting of snow is expected initially.

A stronger cold front may spread periods of moderate to heavy rain
across the valleys and foothills Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Gusty southerly winds may accompany this front. Temperatures will
drop to 10 to 20 degrees below normal with highs only in the 60s
in the valley and 40s in the mountains on Wednesday. Snow levels
may drop to around 5500 feet late Wednesday into Thursday. This
will bring snow to the trans-Sierra passes Wednesday into Thursday.
While the exact timing and details of this weather system are
still coming into focus... be aware that winter traveling
conditions are expected over all trans-Sierra passes Wednesday into
Thursday.

Motorists should be alert for slick roads due to the first rain
of the season along with accumulated oil on the roadways. In
addition... be prepared for winter-like weather across the Sierra.
Residents should also be prepared for other impacts of the windy
wet weather. Gusty winds could lead to fallen leaves clogging up storm
drains causing localized street flooding. There could also be power
outages should branches or small trees fall and damage power
lines. Small stream and urban flooding may also occur during
periods of moderate to heavy rain which could impact Road travel.

A showery and unstable air mass may remain over the region
into Thursday. Continue to monitor National Weather Service
forecasts and statements for updates on this developing unsettled
weather.

Goodbye Summer! But there's always Indian Summer to come :)

Still pulling in loads of tomatoes, squash, beans, etc. from the garden at 3,300'
I could use a few more weeks of heat.

Mid-week and beyond definitely looks like fall in central Oregon:

And yet, the high today at my house was 86°...gonna be a bit of a shock to the system over the next few days.

Thanks for the update Ski. Fall/Winter is my favorite time of year in the E.Sierra. Will be making my annual pilgrimage to the area around that time, yee hah. :)

Woke up to raining at my house this morning.

The first indicator: Lying awake in bed pre-dawn...I hear the cat door open, and then kitty jumped up on the bed. Her fur was damp --> RAIN!
Of course, rain in Bend rarely amounts to much -- we average only 12 inches of precip (rain + snow) a year.
Glad I finally got around to putting new batteries in my rain gauge yesterday, in anticipation of the rain that was forecast for this week.
Mark's Weather

Two years ago today a large storm came into Ca.Here in Monterey we had 5"wow that was a good start to a wet winter for us.But it was also the day we sold our little camper trailer in Reno and stop at ATC and sit down with Marty to order our bobcat.Memories.
We will see what this front brings, not expecting much though.

Stay dry.Frank

A new low in Highs today at my house in Bend: 60.6° It was the lowest high temperature since last spring.
But I still haven't turned on the furnace in my house...

Still got lots of tomatoes on the vine here in No Cal. Chance of rain Tuesday is 100%

Spent yesterday afternoon scrubbing my leaf guard gutters from all the crud that living in a forest dumps on your roof. Still got some excess firewood out there in the woods to wheelbarrow under cover.

Still, summer's not completely gone is it?? :(

Here in the Sacramento Mountains the aspens are starting to turn. They should reach their peak in a week or so.

We also have a nice southwest flow bringing us some showers and thunderstorms. The more rain the better before the usual autumnal dry spell hits. Hasn't gotten down to freezing yet at the observatory (9200 feet elevation), but it won't be long. Hmmm - time to winterize the Eagle's water tank...

A new low in Highs today at my house in Bend: 60.6° It was the lowest high temperature since last spring.
But I still haven't turned on the furnace in my house...

OK...I gave in -- I turned on the furnace tonight...first time in months.

Yeah, Sadie is lounging by our gas fireplace wearing her smoking jacket. :D
The cats like it too. It's their first winter at my house.

Last week, went down another 2 degrees, I think this was by Taylor Reservoir in Colorado.Lots of color!

The last is going up to Marshall Pass near Poncha Springs, CO.

Mr. Lighthawk and Mr. BC, same here. The gas log stove on the hearth was on last night. The gutters were cleaned early Saturday morning. Need to lube the snowblowers and fire them up.

Mr. Chnlisle, got an extra room when we need it?

There is always plenty of room and good food at the inn.

We don't see much of the autumnal changes here on the beach (the palm trees just blow in a different direction!)but the mornings are definitely getting a little crisper....a foggy September and rain in the first week of October?? WTH? Where's our Indian Summer?
