Meteorological Spring

yeah, that'll help with the snow pack...How's that guy building the real big boat for all the animals doing?

Oh yeah, the time of year when the roads open but you may or may not want to actually drive them.

I'm hoping that was an April Fool's joke. Kinda getting tired of it, although I hate to complain after the drought.
Nope, no April Fool's prank -

.SYNOPSIS...
Dry and warm weather continues through Wednesday. Stormy weather
returns Thursday with heavier precipitation Friday and into the
weekend, potentially bringing heavy mountain snow, valley
thunderstorms, and strong winds.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Mid and high clouds are beginning to increase across interior
NorCal. Current temperatures are in the mid to upper 20s in the
colder mountain valleys with mainly 40s to mid 50s elsewhere.

Upper ridge transits the area today then shifts east into the
interior West on Wednesday. Dry and mild weather will continue
across the region despite periods of cloudiness.

Upper trough presently over the Gulf of Alaska will continue to
gradually approach NorCal through the remainder of the week.
Shower chances are expected to hold off until Thursday when the
initial short-wave lifts out across NorCal ahead of the main
trough.

Models continue to pinpoint Thursday night into Friday as a
particularly active period of weather for the region as a stronger
wave moves into NorCal tapping deeper moisture and bringing
increasing rain, mountain snow and strong gusty southerly winds.

&&

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Saturday THROUGH Tuesday)
After the brunt of the storm on Friday, NorCal will continue to
have showery, unsettled weather into early next week. On Saturday,
our region will have light valley rain and light to moderate
Sierra snow as snow levels lower between 3500-4500 feet. Since the
main cold front will have tracked eastward, clearing behind the
front plus lingering instability could trigger a slight chance of
afternoon thunderstorms. Moving into Sunday, valley rain is still
possible and snow levels could lower to around 3000 feet, however,
any additional rain/snow accumulations will be light.

Models suggest that another storm is set to move across NorCal
late Sunday into Monday. The ECMWF looks much stronger and wetter
with this system compared to the GFS run. Have chances for
precipitation across our region on Monday diminishing early
Tuesday, but details on this storm are still vague. JBB

Just the forecast I was hoping for for my three day weekend. Not! I may have to go play in the snow though.

Mr. BC, you are correct! :)

But, experience has taught me that April snow storms rip and freeze the blossoms off our peach trees.

Just because there's snow on the roof doesn't mean there's no fire in the furnace.

(especially if your attic is well-insulated)

No interesting precip on tap in the Bend country, but we've got another kind of excitement going on right now:

Mr. BC, I'll give you a big wave if I see you flying by. :)
Looking out the window of my house right now I see big trees swaying and whipping around more than I have in a while. I'm just glad that the biggest ponderosas are not upwind of my house...though even a 40-ft juniper wouldn't be good if it hit.

The weird thing is, it's sunny and beautiful, so the psychological impact of "dark and stormy" isn't there.

Well my roofer got done about the same time as it started to rain. Probably means it won't now :)

snow on the ground this morning.............................................
Well, I didn't see any on the ground when I got up, but I was surprised to see a skiff on some shrubs and the west-facing side of roofs -- less than ¼ inch, but it's white.

I'm sure sounding like a broken record of late but--------lot's of wind, rain some snow-yes this morning and several times this afternoon, with patches of sun in between, then repeat. But so far it has not been that cold-cold enough to snow-but not freeze everything. It's supposed to get better early next week, then another storm mid week, more water then repeat. All the creeks are getting ready to flood, dams are fighting to hold back the water and every one has spring fever!

I'm sure tired of all this but not a thing to do about but bitch and try to get in a quick trip up to the lake-Eagle Lake that is, and yes there is water there and it is starting to look good again and got to camp for a few days until the wind/rain/snow got to,bad, but did see a Fosters Tern diving in the shallows-first one in several years---a real good sign. Stopped snowing and the sun is out again!

We experienced a return to winter last Friday, on a trip to Downieville for the Banff Mtn Film Festival.
We spent Saturday visiting Sierra Valley where roads were flooded and the 5,000' valley floor was covered in snow. Crossing Yuba Pass was amazing with two feet of fresh snow between Sattley and Sierra City.
