Like many of you, I have an obsession for the perfect piece of gear. Great engineering thrills me and a great piece is often worth the money because it works better, lasts longer and is more enjoyable to use. So, since I've busted or quickly worn out every cheap duffel bag I've bought, I'm on the hunt. Despite being obsessed, I'm not into the $600 bags in Overland Journal. That's just silly unless you have money to burn. But...I'm looking at these below. Anyone have suggestions?

My criteria are: tough, preferably water/weather resistant, and the more pockets/compartments the better. Also considering between 4700-6500 cu in. And NO wheeled luggage!

I like the duffels made by Gregory. I think they are called the Long Haul Duffel.

I have four of them, and am planning on ordering a couple more.

Think the bottom will hold up to being tossed around on Line-X? Many of my duffels wear through the corners when I leave them in the bed of the truck. LineX is like sandpaper on waterproof materials and cheap nylon.

Line X is like sandpaper on sandpaper. I'd look to the pack mfgs. I have had good luck with Gregory, Kelty, Mtn Hard Wear and Pack Shack. Galls sells bags made of Ballistic Cloth.

Best bag I ever bought, and fleece gear for that matter - Nomar from Homer, Alaska. It's made super tough and really practical. They will customize anything they sell and look after it. BOMBER!

FYI nomaralaska.com

They ARE interesting. Adding it to my short list. Wish they had more pockets though.

I have no doubt that for a few $ they'd put on as many pockets as you like. Worth an email. Btw I'm not affiliated with them, just a big fan of the gear. I too like to buy the best when possible. Better to shell out once than cheap out a bunch of times!

I have been looking also. I need one for the back of my DR650 for camping gear. Number 2 on your list is going to be perfect for me!!! Thanks!!!

Might want to check out the North Face base camp duffel. Tough as hell and waterproof as one can be without being a dry bag. They have them in size small to enormous.

Like I said earlier, I really an happy you posted this. I finally ordered your #2 choice from Cabelas and it arrived today. It is going to be perfect for my motorcycle camping needs!!!!

Cool. What is your sense of its toughness so far? I mean, think the bottom will hold up to Line-X in the truck bed?

My perfect duffel is one made by a company right down the street from me. On Rope 1 makes gear for caving and cave/cliff rescue mostly. (they are the OEM maker for several companies in the US including - am I allowed to say this? - PMI, Spec-Ops, and others.) I don't work for them I just have some of their gear and its indestructible. My favorite bag is a single compartment "bat bag" 1000D nylon - bullet proof.

The double duffel is about the same size but has 2 or 3 compartments - one of them waterproof

The joey bag has an expandable waterproof compartment for putting dirty clothes in

all 3 of these are about the same size - you can pick your colors of material, thread, webbing, everything for like $5 more.
the X-bag is their monster bag at 5400 cu in. Way overbuilt 1050D nylon, toothed zippers, awesome stuff.

I have used their caving backpack for like 6 years, caved and climbed in their harnesses for longer, have a bat bag that I use for everything.
Its quality gear and its affordable, and isn't that what we all want?

YEP!!!

Maxpedition makes pretty stout bags and gear. The medium duffel I have is a good size and has a good number of pockets.

we have a few crews that use bags from this place. They really like them, and they are not too expensive. The laminated fabric is like heavy truckers tarp and everything is well stitched and bar tacked. Our crews throw them in the back of our trucks, on the flat beds of our big trucks or where ever and they hold up very well.

I use duffel bags from Patagonia. They make a waterproof bag with a waterproof zipper in several sizes that are as tough as can be. You can't kill 'em.

Herm - Thanks for mentioning our line of 100% MADE IN THE USA heavy duty duty duffle bags. They were originally designed for extreme use by offshore and industrial workers, and have since branched out into the fishing, hunting and outdoor markets very well. We also do custom embroidery in-house if you'd like to get your name or logo on your bags. http://workbagsonline.com

After seeing it here, I got one of these workbagsonline and tested it this weekend. It's an impressive bag. Definitely sturdy, with solid stitching unlike every Eddie Bauer bag that fell apart. The material is thick and strong. If not waterproof, certainly weather resistant enough to take anywhere in any conditions. I especially like the inside partitions which I believe is unique to this bag. I think they call it an "interior organizer", but these compartments are the best duffel bag interior pockets I've come across. So useful and flexible. Here is a shot of the interior, you can see two compartments, one with socks, one with underwear and then larger compartments to the left/bottom (with blue jeans) and top/right (sweatshirt):

Have you looked into Filson?

These bags are expensive and should last a long time. I have had a few Filson products, but I have not tried their duffel bags.
