Stage II Fire Restrictions

...............the stupidity pandemic continues among the pilgrims and a biblical "smite" was needed.
Regarding the chainsaw restrictions: apparently it is perfectly okay to operate a chainsaw, weedwhacker, brush mower, etc. or drag a box grader through dry weeds and tear up sagebrush with a backhoe at any hour of the day any day of the year as long as it is on private property - and according to many of my neighbors a Red Flag Warning is the perfect time to engage in an such activities.

(do I need to put a snark tag on this post?)

Pandemic of stupidity or sociopathy? Some people will do whatever they are allowed to get away with. Critical thinking and ethics take work.

Thinning and prescribed fire work. This has been shown to work many times but for some reason we just don't do it on a large scale :(

We have had so many fires. From the hill above the town of Walker it is frighteningly clear that the remaining fuel is the residential area on the west side of the highway.

Christmas Valley (South Tahoe) was served a stroke of luck in the Caldor Fire but was, I believe, saved by a huge community effort that minimized the risk of wildfire.

This pile, cut by two little old ladies with long handles pruners, a small chainsaw and a hand saw, came off the hill behind the house. While I have cleared brush from the rest of the property the area above the house, except for about a ten foot swath, had not been touched. We are trying to leave the few Pinyons (remove dead lower limbs) as well as Bitterbrush (deer food) and some clusters of Desert Peach ('cause it is pretty) and Sagebrush (cover for wildlife) The picture was taken on day one and is larger now. The next door neighbor has offered the loan of an old pick-up truck. We need to move some before we cut more. When we are "done" (the job is never really "done" but maintenance is easier) we help the neighbors.

My point is that this is what we need to do. Waiting around for someone else to do something is the equivalent of holding a knife to our own throat. And I just got a new little chainsaw.

Generally those areas where the last percentage of containment remains are areas where its difficult or impossible for even handcrews to build line. While the rain won't put it out, the lower temps and higher humidities help a lot.

Well I will say it. What a pair of useless blobs of protoplasm.
My words were different but you did capture the sentiment.

Their lawyer says they have never committed a crime but then there is this:

Further, Travis received a felony weapons charge for unlawfully and intentionally converting "a firearm into a machine gun or knowingly manufacture a machine gun" sometime between Aug. 9 and Aug. 14, according to the document. Both he and David also received a felony weapons charge for unlawfully possessing a silencer for firearms sometime between Aug. 11 and Sept. 23.

I guess this case has my attention for several reasons. One is that it is perfectly legal to do stupid things during dangerous weather conditions that may start a fire and we all have to sit around and wait for the fire burn forest, homes and endanger lives before law enforcement will do anything but shrug their shoulders. I also believe I was "red flagged" for calling non-emergency dispatch in what I thought was a dangerous situation but that is a whole 'nuther story -

I am surrounded by neighbors who have the intellectual, emotional and social intelligence of a child with oppositional - defiant personality disorder along with a good dose of magical thinking (ex: "I can mow dry weeds during a Red Flag Warning because I am smart and special") and in spite of losing nearly half of our community to a fire just a little over a year ago these people just don't get it.

I want to see some teeth put in Red Flag Warnings. The" recommendations" spelled out in that particular weather warning assumes that people are decent, intelligent and humble. That assumption is dreadfully incorrect.
