No-Destination "Finding Home Tour"

Thanks, Russ!

I'm considering sticking around the PNW til the end of August. Not sure the very beginning of Sept will be too too much cooler heading East and South, but maybe?

Go down to my friends in Yachats, with a stop over to visit with WtW DavidGraves and his wife, then Corvallis, then back up here to the Olympic Peninsula via Mt Rainier NF and a tour through Seattle (my old stomping grounds 1990-1994!)

I'm slowly getting caught up.... :D

Onward to Spokane!

One of the things I realized while boondocking in Montana was that I've done a lot of alone-time campering over the past few years and right now I have a unique opportunity to visit some old friends. As well, this is my "finding home tour" and that isn't just about location - community is a giant slice of that pie chart. That's when I decided to not continue north to Glacier National Park and instead head West to friends. (click link for more!)

Old Friends

After I left Spokane, I continued on my friend visit adventure and headed West to see some folks I knew when I lived in Seattle 1990 - 1994. Many years ago, they moved just outside the small Washington town of Rockport, Wa. in the North Cascades, on the edge of the North Cascades National Park. I got set up out front, nestled amongst the flower beds. [ 186 more words ]

Flexible

One thing about being on the road is that you often don't have an accurate timeline of your travels. You might find an amazing spot in a rainforest and decide to stay several days instead of your originally planned two nights. The drive towards the next location might have construction and take hours longer than expected, so you stop many miles sooner than what you'd thought. [ 177 more words ]

It's called "Following your nose and smelling the roses". Gee I had to wait until I retired to do it full time hoyden, so enjoy yourself :p ! Speaking of that, smoke is clearing out a tad here in NE Calif/NW Nevada, so I'm heading up to Bucks Bay at Eagle Lake in a bit to camp for a day or two (keep out of the latest fire area ), then maybe if it clears up there up (red flag warning here today) , north to Res C on the Modoc to watch the shooting stars. Anyway, enjoy your run, and keep checking on the fire weather, you would not want to drive into one of the many fire areas we have out west now!

Smoke

Hey Smoke!

Yah, I started feeling like I'd be "stuck" here in the PNW because of all the forest fires would keep me here. I'm heading over to Corvallis later today to visit some friends, then will re-assess the temps and fires for my next direction.

Working on getting to New Mexico in the next couplea weeks....

Your adventures sound great!

Thanks Russ! :D

Books! I have books in my camper again! It's a weakness.
And my bookish friends give me books!

I made the mistake of starting to read one of Neal Stephenson's GIANT hardback books, "Seveneves" while here in Corvallis.
Do I leave it and wonder until I land somewhere, or do I add the weight (it's heavy!) and find a spot for it in my camper?

I've been trying to figure out what I can shed to rationalize bringing it aboard, but haven't figured that out yet.
Water? Hahaha!

I don't allow myself into bookstores anymore, Paul! I have no self-control. And hell, friends in Yachats, Oregon gave me three new sci-fi books for the road. Oops. :D

I'll head up to Portland on Friday (from Yachats, to visit some old friends), then come back coasterly until after Labor Day Weekenders go back to school/work, then I'll make a slow semi-no-destination towards New Mexico :)

This morning's couplea mile hike in Yachats woods. No dinosaur sightings yet.

Fun looking crew!

While you're in Portland, if you want to grab a bite w/the doggies I recommend The Lucky Lab (https://luckylab.com)

Been quite a few years, so it might've changed, but I used to hang out at the Hawthorne location on their back porch with my dog and the local dog park crew. Never got banished despite my dog's insatiable habit of boinging up on picnic tables.

Enjoy!

The Lucky Lab! Haha! Okay!

Hey Russ - thanks! "Happy and relaxed" is a good description. :)

Today, we have this here in Yachats, OR (much worse norther):

"...AIR QUALITY ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL NOON PDT WEDNESDAY..."

I've been sneezing and am congested. My ears are all stopped up.
The smoke is very visible outside.
Well, there's little visibility due to the smoke....

Portland looks just as bad.
My thought is to head there on Friday for the weekend, but we'll see how the smoke and air quality is then. The Alert there also currently ends on Wednesday, so crossing fingers this lifts. (crossing fingers those Canadian fires are quenched.... :( )

Canadian fires are NOT quenched. It is very nasty up here. Calgary has some blue sky today, and we can see the sun! Nice change after 10+ days of no sun (and no clouds... very odd). BC interior is very bad. Over 500 fires at present.

Be aware that Friday morning, the Hood To Coast event starts at Timberline Lodge on Mt Hood and the Portland To Coaxt starts in Portland. Headed to the finish in Seaside. These are foot relay races involving thousands of runners, walkers, vans, & volunteers. Almost 200 miles total.
https://hoodtocoastrelay.com/htc/relay-info/

Don’t drive further north on the coast past Tillamook to avoid the rolling zoo. In Tillamook, take Hwy 6 to Portland.

Weather prognosticators say the air will improve Wednesday.
Good luck. :)
