I 'braved' the weather to drive from Bend, OR to Redding, CA last night. The weather itself wasn't severe -- some snow and snowy-rain...but the temperature was a degree or two each side of freezing until California, and that made it very slick in a stretch of US 97 between Chemult and Chiloquin:
In a distance of about 20 miles on 97 I saw two semis on their side next to the highway (2 unrelated incidents), apparently after losing it on the slick. Flares were still burning and ODOT crews and wrecker still there.

My car with new snow tires (got them just yesterday) did OK, but I could still feel a little squirreliness in the sliickest spots, even going in a straight line with front-wheel drive.

Old fashion stormy Sunday here. We've gotten outside twice to shovel snow. The Lady is making us hot chocolate now; shaken, not stirred. Feels like a real Fall. :)

The news yesterday said that the Portland area is now above average rainfall for the calendar year. Considering the lack of rain through the summer and fall, that means we've had a tremendous amount of precipitation in the past couple of weeks.

Sun's up, it is 25°, all the local roads are covered with ice, it gets dark before 5 pm. I can hardly wait for winter!

The weather shown in the satellite image from this morning looks contrary to the El Niño pattern, which called for a drier PNW and wetter central/southern California...but I guess there can be deviations from the trend.

I'm NOT complaining -- glad to get the moisture!

Yes, thus far this is looking like a more typical start to winter.

It warmed up to 35° yesterday, first day above freezing for awhile...................and 35° was the overnight low. The downspouts are running water; a new sound!

Yep, snow looks good up here now...but it did in December last year, too -- and then it stopped snowing.

But might as well think positively until we have reason to think otherwise! :)

Hopefully it doesn't suddenly warm up here in the west and wash all this snow away, would cause a lot of flooding. Snoqualmie Pass on I-90 with 26" new snow recorded today, on top of 13" yesterday has now received more snow so far this year than it did all of last season (160" has fallen, with a snow pack of 80"). At just 3,000 feet of elevation, in marginal years it may not get too much snow so at the higher elevations there should be quite a snowpack building. Would love to see it last into July

It's after the solstice, so will a new thread be started?
Any Member is welcome to start whatever topic they like (*). :)

In 2013 the Winter Solstice thread became the seasonal thread (17 pages worth!), so there is that precedent.
The winter solstice is a specific moment in time, but since it marks the beginning of winter (traditionally) it's reasonable that the topic becomes the seasonal thread.

But, as I said, Members can start whatever topic they like (within the bounds of the *Site Rules).
