Meteorological Autumn 2017

The overnight low here was 20°F and at 3:30 p.m. it's only 40° -- feels like full-on winter when I step outside (e.g., maybe should have a warm hat on), even though it's sunny and calm.

I'm pleased that my new heated bird-waterer (aka, "bath") is working as advertised -- keeps the water from freezing in winter temperatures (25° at 9 a.m. when I took this photo):

Birds big and small, as well as the squirrely mammals, seem to appreciate the convenient liquid refreshment. Saves them a 200-yard flight/hike to the Deschutes River.

First snow of the year (that stuck) at my house, this morning. :)
(actually, it's the first snow that I've seen -- I think it snowed here in mid-October when I was out of town)

It's already melted...

Well, it sort of didn't happen here-some rain, some wind, cold, some corn snow here on the valley floor and snow in the high country. Had to go to Reno today and was ready for a 4wheel trek-nothing, but a little rain and surprise we even had sun in Reno. But the high country had a dusting at least, so that's good, but still is cold here. Not ready for a cold snowless winter-not yet-got to rake the rest of my leaves up!

Freezing rain!

And the forecast for this morning was correct -- we got some freezing rain here in Bend...at my house, anyway.

Those aren't regular icicles hanging from the deck railings -- they're freezing-raincicles.

Looks like Bigfoot stopped to marvel at the raincicles, too.

Glad I don't need to drive anywhere this morning. :)

Freezing rain is the worst. We have sun and 14°F here this morning. But 15-25 mph winds made it seem quite a bit colder. Looks like the first deep freeze of the year is here for the weekend. Might hit single digits tonight. Short-lived though- should see 40°s again next week. :) Looks like a good week to get the camper off and stored away for the winter.

Another one coming....................................

It's been very windy in Bend since last night and started raining in the wee hours this morning. Quite wet when I woke up.
Now it's still very windy, some rain, but some sun, too -- pretty wild... The temperature is in the mid-40s, so no chance of snow down here.
And it's due to the monster coming on shore:

...and unfortunately, this warm wet from the southwest brought rain to the mountains, currently 38°F at the 6,300-foot base of Mt. Bachelor ski area. And with more warm-wet on the way they're going to be closed through Thanksgiving -- after opening early, this past Saturday.

Still snowing off and on here last night, and mid 20's this morning but warming up over the next couple days here in the Sun Valley, Idaho area. Thankfully, it has been cold, and the mountain is ready for its annual opening on Turkey Day. The race kids have been out training all week, and the public gets to start skiing Thursday. The nordic ski trails up at Galena are in great shape and people are enjoying skiing there too. Hopefully the warm snap will be just for a few days.

We are supposed to get another good snow year. Hoping that proves to be correct! We had a great one last year, though it came off the mountains too quickly in the spring and created a lot of flooding problems.
