Summertime!

This summer's corn seems to be doing well here. We had our first local sweet corn of the season last week and it was wonderful.

I always think of corn on the Fourth of July as I worked on a dairy farm for a summer in my teens. The farmer told me the old 'knee-high by the Fourth of July' saying and it stuck.

That prompted me to take along a six-foot rule on today's journey to the mailbox. You might be able to see it standing to the left of the mailbox if you look close....

So it turns out the corn here is eight feet high on the Fifth of July.

And that led me to find this...

What's the deal with "Knee-high by the Fourth of July?"

And so now I know our corn (actually our neighbor's) is as high as an elephant's eye on the Fifth of July.

Really? I thought that was an Oklahoma thing...

:p

Here's a surprise, it is raining here. The Lady is upcountry helping with a heavy equipment crew leveling off and improving drainage at a new trailhead. The rain with help with the dust. She took her hard hat. I'm anxious to hear the story at day's end.

With just two weeks left in [meteorological] summer 2019, it's been a relatively mild one (for temperatures) in Bend, OR.
We've only had a handful of days in the 90s, and not warmer than the mid-90s at all. This isn't cooler than average -- it's about average...but most years recently seems like there's been more "hot" days.
The forecast for the next 10 days is typical of the weather we've had:

If every summer was like this one I'd stop thinking "...maybe I should just bite the bullet and get air conditioning...".

I say the same thing too Mark, "get one or a swamp cooler. but never do." Something about feeling closed in when you use those things, since I always have the windows and doors open anyway (even have the front storm door open in the winter-again need to see outside and be able to watch the snow fall) and the sealing fan going. So what, the older I get the hotter I like it -if it gets to hot, turn on the floor fan too and have another drink :D! Since we don't live in Death Valley, me thinks we will make it Mark!

105 today. I run the AC! Riley still wants his exercise and its much to hot to just walk so we went down to the American River and swam. Water is still a bit cool but not bad.
