The Perfect Duffel Bag

For the size you reference, 4,700-6,500 cubic inches, I would buy a good expedition backpack. That will last you longer than any duffel bag. Most duffel bags I find, are not built for the abuse a good expedition pack is built for. Not only that, you can get the pack that best suits your needs. I am a backpack/gear bag freak. I have either a pack and or bag for each activity I am involved in. When I do know I am going to need that size I either use a large dry bag if near water and if not I always go to my expedition packs. It's also nice to have the availability of mounting it on your back if you need two hands at any time. My large dry bags all have back pack straps as well.

Just a thought, but it works for me.

Well guys, this is going to age me, but here it goes. So go to a war surplus store and get a real GI issue duffel bag. I still have the one the army issued me back on Dec 8, 1963! Over the years it seemed like I got a new travel bag from sears every year or so because they got pretty rough treatment in the back of my blm rig and at all the air ports (lot's of zipper problems) I had to go through, but my old army OD Duffel bag (still have two, plus my AWOL bag in the store room) was always ready and still look almost new & they still work-even still have my name and serial # on them too. Seriously, the new bags with all the wheels and zippers and things really don't work to well out in the boonies so there were times I had to use my old duffel bag or my old Kelty backpack-still have the first one I ever bought in 1968. I don't even know if they still make them like they used too, for all I know some low bidder got the contract and the new ones are junk, but the old ones were really good! Just a thought!

I'm still using my dad's duffel bag from WW2. Still in good shape. I get a twinge of sadness though when I see his name stenciled on the side. That bag has seen a lot.

I still have my free issued duffel also.
What was the saying at the time....."The only Woodstock I saw was a M14.

Yep they were good bags! The M-14- Damn thing I used in basic had a plastic cover over the barrel that rattled all the time, and the sights would never hold the zero! That was along time ago and after that I was never issued one again; in my first actual line unit had a M1 Carbine , then when I went overseas I got a .45! Those were the days!

And to the fellow who mentioned Filson on the previous page: they make nice stuff! I'm eyeing one of those too. I'm a bit disappointed they now sell them through Cabela's though. That's like selling Omega watches at Sports Authority.

hands down the best is from our army... large ruk sack... or a 3day assault pack. reguardless they are molle equipped and will let you customize your bag. you check into this stuff and its endless

NRS Bills drybag/pack or a good Duluth Pack. Both are canoe or rafting bags.
