Summer Dayz

We've had rain off and on for several days now - even some nocturnal showers. I was sleeping in the camper that night because the power was off and it was too hot in my bedroom. (the utility company has brought in generators since there were so many miles of line burned in the Tamarack fire we are on a limited supply - like Smoke Creek was saying about his area due to the Dixie fire)

It rained earlier this afternoon. It is still cloudy.

So I've spent this summer day first working on my compost piles then canning dill pickle relish and putting cabbage in one and cucumbers in the other fermentation crock. Then I napped through the thunderstorms. I'll begin my next batch of bread tomorrow. Sourdough is a two day process.

And a pretty good aftershock this morning. But the clearest skies I have seen in a couple of weeks.

It's going to be unusually warm at night here the next few days.

Traditionally, people in Bend keep long sleeves - even sweaters - handy on summer evenings outdoors. Many's the time I've taken a fleece pullover to watch local amateur/minor-league evening baseball games -- using the pullover as a seat cushion for the first 6 or 7 innings, then donning it for warmth if I stay 'til the end.

So lows in the upper 60s (F) are unusual.

Now I'm hearing tremendous thunder but little to no rain is hitting the ground. :(

And now my power just went out. Likely caused by the lightning, I reckon.
I reported the outage to Pacific Power with the app on my phone, but they already knew about it.

Ya gotta love the Oregon coast, Steve. I am impressed with all the surfers braving the cold water, but they are all suited up!

Looks the high Sierra Nevada range blocks the monsoonal moisture from the south/east better than does the considerably-lower Cascade range.

That's my theory.

...which reminds me of this silly bit from Monty Python's FC.

It smells like smoke outside...and the air looks hazy in just a couple of hundred yards. Current AQI is 165 -- "Unhealthy".

We've had weeks of wildfires in Oregon -- including the biggest in the country, but maybe we've been lucky in Bend with the wind direction in until now.

Couple hundred yards? I was in central BC last week (Revelstoke) and the smoke was so thick it was hazy in a couple dozen yards... yuck

What a great time to visit the Morongo Basin, Mojave Desert -- no crowds!

:D

And, yeah, a dry heat: 9% RH

This forecast is kinda crazy:
Portland, Oregon -- deep in the land of firs and ferns and marine moisture -- is forecast to be hotter than Twentynine Palms -- in the land of of Marines -- in the Mojave Desert!
