Winter Watch

So far the storms since Christmas have dumped about 8" of rain at our house.
We have haven't had any problems thankfully.

I build a "decorative stream/drainage"area 45 years ago.It safely diverts
the rain water around to the side yard and down the hill into green space.

Stay safe .Looks like the rains are almost finished and we will
have sunny weather for a week or to.

Today is the "big dump" day of this storm cycle. Woke to 9" of new this morning and more is coming down hard. Yesterday morning clearing was 5".

.......and the sound of a chain saw in the distance - trees and branches down.
Cleared a foot of snow. It is still coming down. Power is out, living on the generator. Expect internet to go out within an hour or so...........

Will clear snow again at the end of the day.

this is what 3 - 7 inches of snow looks like. It's that new math stuff

the dreaded berm was not as bad as it could be

sirens, paramedic, chp - after several days of closure 395 was open for just about 24 hours before someone rear-ended a snow blower just south of Bridgeport - and people wonder why they close the roads?

Your snow is also lovely. I am glad you have the snow and not us.
We do get snow here on the coast but it's the king we can look at from afar.
The mountains that surround the Salinas Valley have peeks at almost 4,000'.
When we get a really cold storm then they get a nice cover of snow.

It has actually "snowed" at our house more of icy/snow,enough to look at for a fer minutes.

Stay safe, don't hurt your self shoveling.

New math indeed! Our forecast was for 2 - 4". We got 14". :)

I don't believe they calculated how cold the air mass was/is accurately.

Seems like usually, in central Oregon, the TV weather guy will say: "..forecast for up to 10 inches of snow overnight!", which means we'll actually get 4 - 6 inches.
What I want to know is the most-likely amount of snow we'll get.
I love how AccuWeather presents the likelihood of precipitation -- as a probability distribution. Like this forecast for Wednesday night in Bend:
IMG_20230116_173133.jpg
It shows the most-likely snowfall as well as the likelihood of the extremes.
Other weather forecast sources may offer this kind of probability presentation, too.

The storm had finally made it's way east. But behind now it has gotten colder.
There is some snow at the Pinnacles. Maybe tomorrow morning when the sun comes
out we might see snow on the hills west of Salinas. The level is going to be about 2500'.
What fun.

Now we should get sun for a while.

Day four on the generator. There's a break in the storms. We'll stock up on diesel and generator gas today.

So, our electric utility, PG&E, has spent millions and millions of dollars clearing around power lines for fire safety. You don't want a tree or branches coming down on lines and starting a fire. Millions and millions of dollars. I should say that again, millions and millions of dollars. We get a larger snow storm and the power goes out because a tree or branches has taken out power lines. Don't you think they should be embarrassed?

PG&E: "What is this 'embarrassed' of which you speak?"

That after millions and millions of dollars spent over many many years, trees and branches still remain that can take out power lines.

When we had our cabin in Dorrington, hwy 4 area we would get power outages
during heavy snow due to trees, branches falling onto the lines.

What always hit me is why are the power lines, feeder ones running through the trees?
Just like the fire breaks they need to clear snow breaks. But I am sure there would be an
outcry about cutting down forest trees and the "ugly scar" it would leave.

I guess the choice is power and a treeless corridor for the lines or beautiful trees and no power.

Under grounding would be the best solution but that is big bucks.

Oh well enough soap box stuff.Stay warm/dry/and safe.

Hmmm. I worked for PG&E (Pacific Graft and Extortion?!) from '79-'82 as my first job out of college. The project was supposed to cost $700 million, but somehow (don't ask), it took a bunch of extra years and ballooned to $5 billion. My numbers are probably off, but are ballpark.

When this:
Sustained winds of 25mph with gusts to 35
..means it too windy for this:

It's a good time to do this:
At the Salty K Laundry.
A mundane but productive afternoon on Padre Island, on the Gulf coast of south Texas.
