Winter!

Yeah, Stew -- looks nice...though, with the weeds showing through in spots it looks like there's not a ton of snow there, either. But enough to enjoy, it looks like.

I won't add anymore about how we're doing here in BC

Hmmm....I wonder just how much of that snow that Canada is receiving by-rights belongs to the USA?

Look, we're already, as a sign of neighborly friendship, sending you our wonderful television programs...why must you take our precipitation, too?

We spell neighbour with a u, weird eh?

Well...at least you drive on the right side of the road, so you've managed to put some distance between yourselves and your former British masters.

On topic: It's snowing here this morning (though not much accumulating yet), and the Winter Storm Warning has been re-released and is substantially the same as yesterday, so we still may get several inches in town. I do not believe the "18 inches" part of the forecast; the NWS always overestimates the depth of snow in forecasts -- the depth frequently doesn't even reach the low end of the prediction.

The problem with always forecasting worst-case scenarios -- scenarios that virtually never happen -- is that people who have memories remember that those forecasts didn't happen and you end up with the "boy who cries wolf" situation.
Although...we did have that wolf that passed through Central Oregon a few months ago...

OK, I guess we do have winter here in Bend now:

There's about 5 inches of snow at my house so far, and it's still snowing moderately hard.

HOWEVER: It's currently 33°, and the forecast is to be in the 40s and rain by late-morning --> SLOP!
Late last night I push-broomed my front steps (for me) and back deck (for the kitty), but I better get at it again before slopification takes hold.

Arctic Outflow Warning

An Arctic ridge of high pressure building across the British Columbia interior is producing strong outflow winds through coastal valleys and inlets. The strong outflow winds in combination with very cold air are producing wind chill values exceeding minus 20 degrees for much of the BC coast with values down to minus 35 reported on the north coast.

It's a good day for me to hang out at home and read WTW. A little windy for snowboarding.

I'm going outside with the red tipped flashlights motioning for this one to come straight in and hit us. It is long overdue.

After our 5-ish inches of snow that fell Tuesday-Wednesday, the weather has been uncharacteristically "marine" here in Bend; The temperature has been within 1 degree of 36 for almost 24 hours, and that steadiness of temperature is not typical of the high desert:

Maybe "marine" as in southeast Alaska -- wet and above-freezing, but not much above freezing.
Nearly all the snow is melted now.

Mark you made it back in time! Hey, it's 0915 and it's snowing here in Susanville ! About time, can't see the hills that ring Honey Lake Valley-and that usually a good sign, supposed to have a whole week of this so it's about time to start bitching about all the snow:cool:!! Just walked the dog and it's starting to stick.

Smoke

Well, the extended forecast for Bend makes it look like we really are in winter now:

20120119-2.JPG

I guess it's time to get out my XC-skis...buy a Sno-Park permit...decide whether the snow tires (studded) on my Civic are too worn out and need replacing or just spend more gas and drive the truck up there...

Wow! I've never seen this before -- Mt Bachelor closed due to snow/storm!

DUE TO ONE OF THE MOST SEVERE STORMS IN YEARS, MT. BACHELOR WILL BE CLOSED TODAY.

Please do not attempt to drive up to Mt. Bachelor today. In-bounds hiking is not allowed during these extreme circumstances.

The combination of 5 feet of new snow in 3 days, strong winds and power outages has resulted in extreme operational challenges. We lost power at approximately 9pm last night. We're optimistic that power will be restored by midday today. In the meantime, we are running on our backup generators. This enables us to "keep the lights on" and to operate some of our lifts slowly for maintenance and cleaning purposes.

We have grooming, maintenance, patrol and snow removal crews working hard and fast to assess the mountain and to perform the work necessary to make it safe and comfortable for opening tomorrow. At this point, we expect to open on-time tomorrow morning at 9:00am, but you'll want to check back with us periodically for additional details. The storm is still raging, so we will have to deal with whatever nature still decides to throw at us.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this most severe of storms.

Current Weather - Snowing heavily. Mid-mountain wind is estimated at 35-50 mph with occasional higher gusts.

Snow Surface - Extremely deep snow. Educate yourself about Tree Well Safety... with the deep snow, Tree Wells are becoming a hidden danger.

No doubt, come to Papa!!!

Lookin' wet 'n' wild, Western-weather-wise!

I hope you Californians/western-Nevadans get some frozen wet out of this.
We (in the central Oregon Cascades, not Bend) got about 5 feet of it in a couple days this week!

Sure is stacked up against the great wall of the Sierras...why the east side is the dry side.

VIS1FAT20120120-1.GIF

We got 2.09 inches of wet today on the western slope at 3800'
Snow levels are high, but at least all the forest is getting watered and our streams and springs are being refreshed.

Bring it!

Ok, we're getting it. Nice and sloppy with 3.86" of rain today as of midnight. Local wind gusts at 42mph. Snow levels above 7000' at least.

We realized a leak in the converted porch/TV room and sopped up three towels. I could blame the guy that remodeled it, but that would be me, almost fifteen years ago (for a former owner).

Figured four inches of rain was a good test, so I walked the gutters in the storm tonight with a big flashlight and they're mostly spilling over. Even fancy covered gutters get crud that clogs the downspouts. :(

Wow, that's a lot of rain in a day!
